Life lately has felt very overwhelming for many of us. Whether struggling with difficult emotions, relationships, mental health challenges, finances, or health issues, it's easy to feel powerless and completely stuck. Feeling the discomfort and pain of these issues can often feel hopeless.
Please do not give up. Within each of us is an incredible capacity for creativity - and tapping into this can be profoundly healing. At first it may seem that "tapping into creativity" is just an additional thing to feel overwhelmed and confused by, but creativity can actually give us a sense of control and a means to feel a bit better within our circumstances. When we're creating - whether it's writing, drawing, cooking, singing, or any other creative act - we're the ones guiding the process. We choose what we want to make and how. If we can let go of some of our perfectionism, and just be in the flow, creativity can help counteract the sense of helplessness we may feel when life feels out of control. Creativity connects us to satisfaction. There is often great pleasure in simple creative acts. Think of the peace that one finds in the simple stitches when sewing, the delight in a well cooked meal, the calm found in a coloring book or paint by numbers. The connection to creation is uplifting, and can remind us of the goodness in life when things feel bleak. Creativity grounds us in the present moment. When we're immersed in a creative act, our focus narrows to the task at hand. This can help pull us out of unhelpful thoughts about the past, or anxious thoughts about the future. It helps anchor us in the here and now. This centeredness can be soothing and empowering. Creativity helps us process emotions. There is great healing potential in expressing our deepest feelings creatively. Writing a poem about heartbreak, for example, allows us to give expression to the formlessness of grief. Doing so helps us externalize and work through difficult emotions. Dance and movement open up dynamic avenues for unpacking anxiety and tension. The flow of the body through space lets us physically process bottled-up stress. Releasing feelings through creative outlet can unlock inner peace, or at least help ease the intensity. Creativity has the power to restore our sense of agency, connect us to joy, ground us in the present, and help us heal from painful experiences. If you're currently struggling, give yourself permission to pick up a coloring book, open a journal, or pull out your favorite recipe. Don't underestimate the healing power of making something...
